“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[”
Jesus say “Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt. So will the Heavenly Father do to you unless each of you forgives your brother from you heart.’
Jesus has forgiven us a great debt.. and what we forgive of other is as nothing in comparison to what we have been forgiven. There is an old saying that says ‘everyone think forgiveness is a great thing and should be done, until they have something to forgive. St John Paul II wrote ‘ Forgiveness is above all a personal choice, a decison of the heart to go against the natural instinct to pay back evil with evil.’
Saint Mother Theresa of Calcutta wrote ‘Non-forgiving can destroy your life…Is there unforgiveness in my heart? It’s is an obstacle for life. When it’s too late, nothing can be done.’
‘Show me a bitter sister and I will show you a proud sister. A bitter sister is always a proud sister also. Bitterness and bride are twin sisters-moodiness goes with it. A humble sister will not be bitter or moody. Examine yourself.’
Jesus says ‘You will not be released until you pay back the last penny.’ This was a scripture verse used by the Father’s of the Church for Purgatory. There is a cost for not forgiving. In this life or in the next.
Why do we forgive because God has forgive us.. In the Commentary ‘Sacra Pagina’ tells us the first man was forgiven 10,000 talents, which the Commentary says ‘a ‘Talent’ was a very high measure of money, worth between six thousand and ten thousand denarii when one denarii was a day’s pay. So ten thousands talents is an astronomical sum. (like a billion dollars for us.’ a debt so large that the servant could never repay it.” This is what the first man was forgiven.
‘A hundred denarii.. compared to the debt of ten thousand talents was a piddling sum (100 days’s wages) that could easily be paid back if the servant showed patience. His treatment of the fellow servant contrasts sharply with that shown to him by the king.”
So it was nothing that he needed to forgive, and we can say ‘you don’t know how hurt I was.’ But still nothing of what we have been forgiven by God.’
