A thought on the TLM mass.. as a Catholic Priest who never learned Latin.
I took it in High School years before I even thought God called me to the priesthood.
I took it because of a learning disability.. which made it almost impossible speak a foreign language.. I failed Latin
I took it again in college to prove to myself I could do it..
This is before entering or applying to the seminary.
I have gown up on the new mass.. I went to one TLM mass in the seminary but never felt drawn to it.
That being said I never had a problem with the TLM mass. I knew so many good holy priest and lay faithful that loved it.
At my mass and healing service a large number came from this community. In many cases it was the first time they were at something Charismatic, with guitars and hands in the air.
The Holy Spirit draws people by many paths. As a recent pope says’There in one way Jesus but many paths to that one way which is Jesus
In our culture we are becoming and losing our common connection. This is social distancing. There is a danger to be manipulative for political ends when we are alone lonely and lose the value of friendship.
But also when we lose our history tradition. We learn history to help us know who we are. With the loss of our shared church history our tradition. This can also help us lose are anchor. We can lose the weight of who we are. Thus the danger of also of emphasizing our self our feelings our individuality at the expense of our community history tradition. We can become more prone to be manipulated for political ends.
This might not be as much a problem for older people but what about a teenager who is taught that everything old is suspect and everything new novel is to be embraced. Not so much because it is true but only because it is new and interesting..
