I looked up what is the birthrate.. I read this

‘The U.S. birth rate has fallen by 20% since 2007. This decline cannot be explained by demographic, economic, or policy changes.’

St Paul tells women ‘not to women of leisure.. get married keep busy so not to give the pagans a reason to gossip.’ I think it was St Ignatius who wrote ‘idleness is the devil worship.’

What does the birthrate and for that matter marriages. Which I just read from an article ‘the end of marriages’

‘While it may not have ended, marriage in America has unquestionably declined over the recent past and is now at historic low levels for the country.

Throughout the 20th century, the annual U.S. marriage rate was generally no less than eight marriages per 1,000 people. The marriage rate also varied considerably over the years of the past century. It declined to around eight marriages per 1,000 population at the time of the Great Depression and peaked at more than 16 marriages per 1,000 at the close of World War II.

Since the start of the 21st century, the U.S. marriage rate has declined from more than eight marriages per 1,000 down to six marriages per 1,000 population in 2019. That marriage rate is the lowest level since the U.S. government began keeping marriage records for the country in 1867.’

So Generation Z are not getting married or having children at nearly the same rate as past generations.. so what fill the gap. It is politics!

With all that free time on our hands we can fall into the temptations that politics is everything. One of the nice things about traveling outside the belt way is that you learn that not everyone lives and breaths politics. They have life to lead, babies to fed..

So with fewer babies and marriages we simply have more time on our hands to imagine the better world that Washington can give us..

Leisure is a good thing, in fact leisure is a virtue. But it also true when we are not worrying about our children because we don’t have them or our spouse because we didn’t get married. Something will fill in the gap and that is an unhealthy love of politics..
