When I woke up this morning.. My Facebook was lighted up by all the displays of mockery of Christianity and more precisely… Catholicism at the opening ceremonies. France is called the ‘eldest daughter of the Catholic Faith.’ 

When I was reading this my mind.. went back to history (Nov 10, 1793).. to be exact.. When ‘When an attractive young opera singer was carried on a palanquin to the doors of the Notre Dame Cathedral, the singer – scantily clad and bearing the pike of Jupiter was to play the part of liberty in one of the strangest performances the 600-year old Catholic cathedral  would ever witnesses… around the ‘mountain’ which had been erected in the Cathedral’s nave. Around the mountain stood a troupe of ballet dancers, all bearing torches in her honor. On the top of the mountain sat a small Greek temple with the words ‘To Philosophy.’ 

In fact the first day of the New Republic was ‘May 5, 1789.’ … This was to highlight that Christianity was ‘to be no more.’ Sunday was removed from the calendar.. as there were now 3 weeks of 10 days.’  To highlight this new pagan ascendancy the French would have over the top ‘Pagan ceremonies worshiping the Greek and Roman Gods.

When I learn this in history class in the seminary it seemed like a fairy tale.. But I have to think that the opening ceremonies were meant to recreate this event many centuries ago.. We see a mockery of the ‘Last Supper.’ We see a blue Pan.’ We see a fiery red Queen Marie-Antoinette.. holding her beheaded head in her hands.. speaking to the crowd.. admits the explosion of fire works.. 

We see a drag queen leading the parade.. in must the same way that a prostitute was marched into Notre Dame.. so many years ago..

It makes me that yes.. the organizers of the opening ceremonies truly wanted to recreate and bring to memory. that fate full day at Notre Dame 250 years ago..
