Futon Sheen writes ‘Our Blessed Lord instituted a sacrament for our spiritual wounds, ie confession.’

As confession is oriented to healing spiritual wounds. Anointing of the sick is oriented more towards the healing of the body that has been wounded by sin. As Fulton Sheen writes about Sacrament of anointing ‘This particular sacrament wants to do away with all traces of that sin and in some way restore the body to health again if it be God’s will.’

While the body will not always be healed. Anointing is oriented more towards the body than the soul.

In the old rite during anointing all 5 senses were anointed. Why? As Fulton Sheen writes ‘You cannot think of a single sin that did not cone through the body, not a one.’ ‘When a sin gets into the soul through the body, it always leave a trace, much like certain diseases.’

Futon Sheen writes ‘In anointing of the sick there is no mention of death. It is not necessarily the sacrament of the dying; it is the sacrament of the sick.’

‘The sacraments looks to the body. It seeks to give it relief so it will not impede the Soul’s love of God.’

Anointing of the sick according to Venerable Sheen ‘Our death is united to His and we’re also united to His Resurrection. This sacrament prefigured the anointing of future glory’

So even when anointed near death. Anointing of the sick is still connected to the body more than the soul, healing the effects of sick and looking to the Resurrection of the Body.
