Mother’s Day and the Holy Spirit reflection from the ‘Soul Institute’

I just got an emergency call to go to the hospital and anoint this woman. Her son said that she only has minutes to live. I anointed her, and twenty members of the family prayed the divine mercy chaplet. After I anointed her I felt something of what a mother feels like when she give birth to a child.

On Mother’s day even a priest can feel like a mother. Now we know that a priest is not a mother, but he can experience some of the feeling of motherhood. St Paul says in Galatians, ” My little children, with whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you.” (Gal 4:19) St Paul is certainly drawing on a maternal image.

The Holy Spirit is like a mother. Cardinal Ratzinger wrote, “In both Hebrew and Greek, ‘wisdom’ is a feminine noun, and this is no empty grammatical phenomenon in antiquity’s vivid awareness of language. ‘Sophia’ a feminine noun, stands on that side of reality which is represented by the woman, by what is purely and simply feminine…Spirit too, is feminine in Hebrew…

Because of the teaching about the Spirit, one can as it were practically have a presentiment of the primordial type of the feminine, in a mysterious, veiled manner, within God himself.” There are many quotes from the saints where they united the Holy Spirit and Motherhood. This one quote from Saint Catherine will suffice, “The Holy Spirit becomes for people who abandon themselves to providence a mother who feeds them from the breast of divine charity.”
