St Therese ‘I know now that true charity consists in bearing all our neighbours’ defects–not being surprised at their weakness, but edified at their smallest virtues.”
St John of the Cross wrote ‘where there is no love put love and you will find love.’
Paddington Bear embodies both St Therese and John of Cross.
Mr. Brown says that “Paddington looks for the good in all of us, and somehow … he finds it.” That trait, in itself, helps make the people around him better. As parents and teachers know, when we show faith in people — when we treat them as valued — those people respond well. They want to live up to your expectations.’
Mrs Brown adopts a poor little bear into her home. This is something that Mr Brown is opposed too. He is a risk management specialist. He figures out that having a bear in the house increases the odds of disaster by 4,000 percent. But love takes risk. Mrs Brown with her big heart brings Paddington home from the train station. And even thought according to Mr Brown calculation having a bear in the house increases the danger of total collapse of the house by 4,000 percent by his numbering. Still Paddington bear and teach us about love acceptance and seeing the good in others.
