Jesus asks His Apostles ‘who do people say that I am ?’
The answer some say ‘you are Elijah or one of the prophets’ but Jesus says to Peter ‘who do you say that I am?’
Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.’
Faith is not private thoughts, or worse the spirit of the age that reduces everything and worse Jesus to what I think ? One the failures is that we think listening to what the Masses say is faith. One Church Fathet says ‘if we only agree with what makes sense to us it is not divine faith that we have but our own opinion?
That we why when an adult comes into the Church they make an act of faith saying that they believe all that the Church teaches to have been revealed by God’ they profess both human and divine faith.
It struck me that this listening stage where one person option thoughts is as good as anyone else is equivalent to faith. At least the people in the Gospel thought that Jesus was Elijah.. they were wrong but they were at least closer than what many say today..
This being said it might be true that we are living out this event when Jesus asked Peter ‘who do you say that I Am ? ‘ is bring lived out today in the Church.. and in the end only Peter was right.. that means the faith is only preserved in the Apostolic tradition of Peter.
Faith is not what I or you think. Faith is say Yes to what the Church as always believed. And in the end only Peter was right..
We are living out this Gospel story today..in the end I want to say with St Theresa of Avila at her death ‘I die as a faithful daughter of the Church’ I will rather die with Francis Peter in the bark of the Church. Than die outside the Church with what the world says about Jesus.
Jesus says to you and me ‘who do you say that I am?’
