At your Confirmation you received the ‘Seal of the Holy Spirit.’ ‘The Seal of the Living God.’….When you were baptized the Bishop said ‘be sealed with the Holy Spirit.’ When I was confirmed Bishop Keating said in his homily ‘You will be confirmed everyday of your life as you are today.’
The Church teaches that this seal is permeant on the soul. …during my retreat last week I was asking Jesus to release the Holy Spirit given to me at my confirmation… as Confirmation is a living reality… and you are as confirmed today as I was in 8th grade as if you are confirmed today…
Andrew Apostolic CFR in his book ‘The Gift of God the Holy Spirit. writes … ‘Some of the Fathers of the Church offered this explanation of the ‘sealing the Holy Spirit.’ They compared the soul of the person to liquid wax. The One Who impresses the ‘Seal of the Holy Spirit.’ and the ‘Seal’ itself is also the Holy Spirit….’ While we are sealed with Holy Spirit.. it is an present reality.. and sin grim and cover the Seal, blocking the graces of the Holy Spirit from beginning released.. As Fr Apostoli writes ‘ It will always require the constant application of the ‘seal’ to the wax for the image to remain.’ ..’The Seal (the Holy Spirit’ must be continuously applied to the soul.’
Fr Apostoli offers a new insight to me when Bishop Keating said at my Confirmation ‘You will be as confirmed everyday of your life as us are today.’ I can now see that I can pray Holy Spirit, renew the Seal of the Holy Spirit that you gave me at my Confirmation.. as the Seal while yes was given once as for all times at Confirmation, as the soul is like liquid and form as lose some of its flavor over time, but not the essence of the Seal, it is good to ask Jesus to brand us anew, keeping the branding iron of the Holy Spirit on the Seal given to us at Confirmation..
It is as if, the Oil of Chrism is still on your forehead, and words that the Bishop spoke over you are still living today, and spoken too you today in the Holy Spirit ‘Be Sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.’
